VB - It's really not that bad!
Written by Ian Clarke

VBA LogoAfter a decade of badmouthing VB I've finally had to rely on it as my de facto coding language in my current job.

The conclusion? It's really not that bad!

Sure it makes you lazy because you don't have to declare types, it's a pain to debug because you don't have to declare types and it throws errors up chains that should really just end in a crash. But it does pretty much anything you want it to do and when you couple VBA with access it makes prototyping or development of small projects a breeze.

I've also had and opportunity to give .net a go over the last few months and although we opted to go for VB.net over C# due to the majority of developers only ever having used VBA it was nice to wrap up an if condition again!

Homefront - Conspiring Against Itself?
Written by Ian Clarke

Homefront LogoI really wanted to like this game, in theory it's got so much to offer. A potential dark future storyline, some interesting multiplayer features and was proceeded by some decent reviews.

But as I write this I've spent the last 35 minutes trying to get into a multiplayer game! I swear it conspires against itself. You end up one plater short of the minimum requirement and someone drops out of the lobby, yet somehow they are replaced immediately! I've had this game a week now and have only managed 3 games online.

Maybe it's the fact you have to be level 7 before you can play battle commander mode, supposed to be the reason this game stands out. Surely this should be open from level 1? I hate when games only give you deathmatch until you rank up (I'm looking at you as well Crysis 2!)
Is everyone gleefully playing away on battle commander while us poor Brits with our Friday release dates have already missed the boat? We can't even raise enough layer to start a game! The real kicker is that the campaign is too short so you can't even hit that while your waiting.

It's a decent affair with some pretty nice set pieces but it won't set your world alight. It feels nice to play and the auto aim doesn't over compensate so the game can be quite challenging in places.  I was a big fan of the intro where it sets the scene for the games storyline which could really have turned into something epic. The game is about a bunch of resistance fighters trying to get fuel to the local U.S Military to start a counter attack. Except when you get them the fuel the game ends... This is surely where the game could've picked up the pace and made the most of it's storyline, maybe they're saving it for a sequel.

For those who appreciate irony, while I'm writing this I've been auto kicked from a lobby for idling! Fuck me I was just waiting for enough people to play a damn game.

Overall I find the length of the single player and the frustration of the multiplayer to be um... frustrating.

By all means rent this, the single player is actually fun but you'll complete it in one or two sittings. If you ever get into a multiplayer game it feels similar to MAG but with more depth to the gameplay. But please don't waste your £40 on it.

Killzone 3: Sharpshooter and Move = Epic Win - Collectors Edition Lies = Epic Fail
Written by Ian Clarke

Killzone logo

I'm not going to lie. I'm pissed off.

Seems that the Double XP and all unlocks for your first 24 hours of gaming is not included with the Collectors Edition, only the Helghast Edition.
What this now means is I've paid an extra £7 for a score I'll never listen too and a £3.99 map pack! Hopefully someone at Sony will sort us out but I doubt it. On the bright side the steelbook box looks awesome!

Helghast Baby!

But enough of the bad stuff S far I've had a few hours on the Campaign and it's pretty damn good!

I started playing with the move and the new sharpshooter attachment just to see if it was any good I wasn't expecting much but to be honest I haven't even considered picking up the dualshock. Ok, thats not quite true. You wouldn't want to use it for multi-player unless you love having a .1 KDR. But for the campaign it just feels right.

At first you over compensate every turn but after 20 minutes or so the movement becomes fluid and it gives you a brand new gaming experience. A gun game that's not on rails. The Sharpshooters layout is really well thought out and pretty comfortable until you hit the 2 hour mark! There's good feedback from the vibration function in the move controller. It's a little front heavy but still feels solid and hopefully will be used in more FPS games in the future.

The game so far is also pretty epic, a few issues with the sound mainly contained to characters talking over themselves but certainly nothing to ruin the enjoyment.

Graphically the game looks amazing and I'm glad they've fixed some of the cut-scene transitions and slowdown that were present in the campaign demo. I swear there is no greater feeling in gaming then hitting a headshot on a Helghan. Watching that helmet fly gives me a special warm felling inside every time!

Play it, you'll love it!
